This picture was taken in December 2016 on the Fraueninsel, a very small island in the Chiemsee (also known as the Bavarian Sea), a lake in the very south of Germany – almost kissing Austria.
We were visiting a Christmas market set on this tiny island of 300 inhabitants, spread over a width of 300 meter and a length of 620 meter.
This pic seems to be a normal sunset scenery, but 2 things make it very special:
First of all in December this area is traditionally covered with snow and you couldn´t get a view on these benches. They normally sleep under a huge cover of snow, but the last winter was extraordinary warm.
The second thing that makes this moment special is the crazy fact, that you don´t see any people there.
During two weekends in December about 50.000 people flood this little island. This was the only place and the only moment that day that you didn`t stumble over a horde of people. They all were directly behind my back.
Needless to say, that the former atmosphere of charming intimacy on the Christmas market there changed into a touristy overloaded event and I definitely won`t visit the place in December any longer.
Nevertheless, here is the link to the Christmas market on the Fraueninsel
